Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen village on the old caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Its clustered towers rise above the Ounila Valley just beyond the High Atlas.

What to Expect in Ait Ben Haddou
The ksar is reached on foot across the riverbed or a modern footbridge. Inside, narrow lanes climb between homes, granaries and decorated towers to a viewpoint over the valley and the newer village on the opposite bank.
Because it sits close to the main road between the Tizi n'Tichka pass and Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou is a natural stop on private desert journeys from Marrakech. A local guide can add context to the architecture and families who still maintain homes within the walls.

- Around half an hour by road from Ouarzazate, on the southern side of the High Atlas crossing from Marrakech.
- Time to allow
- Around two hours gives time to cross the river, walk through the ksar and reach the upper viewpoint.
- What to bring
- Comfortable shoes, sun protection and water; the lanes and steps are uneven.
- Visiting respectfully
- Ait Ben Haddou remains home to local families, so ask before photographing people or private doorways.
