Chefchaouen sits high in the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco, its medina painted in every shade of blue. It is a natural stop on journeys travelling south from Tangier towards Fes and the desert.

What to Expect in Chefchaouen
The old town is small enough to wander without a plan: stepped lanes, blue walls, doorways full of plants and a main square where most visitors end up for a late lunch. Mornings are the quietest time for photographs, before the day visitors arrive.
Above the town, a short walk leads to the Spanish mosque and a view back across the rooftops to the mountains behind. Chefchaouen is far from the Sahara, so it works best as part of a longer north-to-south private itinerary rather than a desert day trip.
- Getting there
- Usually reached by road from Tangier or Fes; it is a comfortable half-day drive from either.
- Best time to go
- Spring and autumn are ideal. The town is noticeably cooler and wetter than southern Morocco.
- What to bring
- Shoes with grip for the steep, worn lanes and the walk up to the viewpoint.
- How it fits a tour
- Best combined with Fes and, if you have the days, continuing south to Merzouga.
