Morocco can be travelled all year, but the desert, the mountains and the coast each have their own rhythm. Here is how the seasons feel on a private tour between the imperial cities and the dunes.
Spring: March to May
Spring is the most comfortable season for a desert tour. Daytime temperatures in Merzouga are warm rather than punishing, the oasis valleys are green after the winter rain, and the High Atlas passes still hold snow on the peaks while the roads are open.
It is also the busiest season alongside autumn, so accommodation in the Dades Valley, Merzouga and Marrakech fills early. If you are travelling in April, it helps to fix your dates well ahead.
Summer: June to August
Summer in the Sahara is genuinely hot, often well above what most visitors expect, and the middle of the day is spent out of the sun. Tours still run, and many travellers enjoy them, but the shape of the day changes: early starts, long lunch breaks, camel treks close to sunset and nights that stay warm.
The Atlas Mountains and the Atlantic coast are the relief in these months, and mountain stops feel far cooler than the desert floor.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the other strong season. The heat eases through September, October is settled and clear, and November brings shorter days with sharp light that photographers tend to prefer.
Dates from the Ziz Valley are harvested in this period, and the southern markets are at their liveliest.
Winter: December to February
Winter days in the desert are mild and pleasant. The nights are cold — a desert camp in January needs warm layers, a hat and proper blankets, which the camps provide.
In the mountains, snow can briefly close a high pass such as Tizi n'Tichka, so a winter itinerary needs a driver who can re-route on the day. That flexibility is one practical advantage of travelling privately rather than on a fixed group departure.
Ramadan and public holidays
Ramadan moves earlier each year and changes the atmosphere rather than closing the country: many restaurants adjust their hours, and evenings become the social centre of the day. Tours continue normally, and travellers are not expected to fast.
If your dates fall during Ramadan or a major holiday, say so when you send your request and the itinerary can be planned around meal times and opening hours.
