The drive to the Sahara is long, and it is fair to ask whether it is worth it. For most travellers the answer is yes — as long as the trip is the right length for them.
Why people go
The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are unlike anything else in Morocco: a sea of orange sand, a camel ride in at sunset, a night at camp under a sky full of stars and sunrise over the dunes.
The road is part of the trip. From Marrakech you cross the High Atlas, stop at Ait Ben Haddou and pass through the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge; from Fes you pass the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley.
The honest downside: driving time
Marrakech to Merzouga is a long drive. On a 2-day trip much of the time is spent in the car. If you can, a 3- or 4-day tour splits the road into comfortable days with more stops.
Starting from Fes or Errachidia puts you closer to the dunes, so shorter trips feel less rushed from there.
Why private makes a difference
On a private tour you set the pace: stop for photos when you like, choose your camp level, add a second desert night or end in a different city. That flexibility is what makes the long road feel worth it.
Who should choose a longer trip
- Families with children or anyone who finds long drives tiring
- Photographers who want the best light in the gorges and dunes
- Travellers who want a full day around Merzouga rather than one night
