The desert is hot by day and can be cold at night, and the road there crosses the High Atlas. Dressing well is mostly about layers, sun protection and comfort in the car.
Layers first
Temperatures change a lot between a midday stop and a night at camp, and between the desert floor and the Atlas passes. Light layers you can add or remove work better than one heavy item.
For the camel trek
- Long, loose trousers — more comfortable on the saddle than shorts
- A scarf or head cover against sun and wind-blown sand
- Sunglasses and sun cream
- A small bag for the overnight things you carry into camp
Shoes
Sand gets into everything. Sandals are easiest around camp and on the dunes; closed, comfortable shoes are better for walking in Todra Gorge, Ait Ben Haddou and the medinas.
By season
- Spring and autumn: light clothes by day, a warm jumper or fleece for the evening
- Summer: very light, covering clothes and a hat; nights stay warm
- Winter: a warm jacket and hat for camp nights — blankets are provided, but the evenings are cold
Respectful dress in towns and villages
Morocco is relaxed with visitors, but covering shoulders and knees in villages and small towns is appreciated and also keeps the sun off.
